Hamstring Tendon Rupture / Strain

 
What is a rupture of the hamstring tendons?
The hamstring muscles consist of the Biceps femoris, Semitendinosus and Semimembranosus. The muscles insert at the back of the knee through tendons. It is possible for these tendons to be torn during an explosive or kicking movement.

Symptoms of hamstring tendon rupture:
A sudden sharp pain in the back of the knee.
Swelling, tenderness and heat coming from the point where the tendon inserts into the knee.
Pain when you bend the knee against resistance.
Treatment of hamstring tendon rupture:
What can the athlete do?
Apply cold therapy or R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression, elevation)
After the first 2 to 3 days wear a heat retainer.
See a sports injury professional who can advise on a rehabilitation programme.
What can a sports injury specialist or doctor do?
Advise on a rehabilitation programme consisting of stretching, strengthening and sports massage techniques.
Prescribe anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen.
Apply a plaster cast.
Operate
